Smoked as free base or (more rarely) water-soluble salt or change. More rarely: injected). Orally effective only with MAO inhibitor (e.g. ayahuasca). Intense psychedelic and hallucinogenic effects.

Widely distributed in plant and animal life, DMT is also found in the human body. Besides DMT there are several other tryptamine derivatives like 5-MeO-DMT, DET & DPT. As a free base, DMT can also be smoked pure. Changa (smoking mixtures of herbs & DMT base) and Ayahuasca (plant drink, contains DMT salts & MAO inhibitors) are also common.

EFFECTS 

Smoked after a few seconds. Peak after approx. 5 min. Usually lasts less than 30 mins.

Injected after 2-5 min. Usually lasts less than 30 min (i.v.) or 30-60 min (i.m.).

Oral consumption within 1h, peak after 1.5 – 2h. Can last 4-6hrs. or longer.

Strongly dependent on dose, set, and setting, and difficult to predict. At low doses mostly stimulating, euphoric. At high doses, visual illusions and hallucinations. Distortions of body image, speech difficulties and strong mood swings from euphoria to anxiety possible.

INTAKE AND DOSAGE 

Oral
DMT is broken down so quickly by MAO enzymes that it does not produce a hallucinogenic effect on its own. Ayahuasca contains herbal MAO inhibitors in addition to DMT salts and has a much longer effect than smoked DMT (several hours, depending on the ingredients). Usual dosage: 0.6-0.85 mg/kg.

Smoked
Average dose is approx. 20 to 50 mg as free base. The threshold for a high dose is approx. 0.5-0.7 mg/kg body weight.

Injections
i.m.: 0.2-1 mg/kg of DMT salt (i.v.: 0.1 to 0.4 mg/kg).

SIDE EFFECTS

TOLERANCE

In contrast to other psychedelics, hardly any development of tolerance after DMT use. No cross-tolerance to LSD, mescaline & psilocybin.

PARTICULARLY RISKY

Especially in persons with histories of psychosis or bipolar disorder. Mixed use with MAO inhibitors.

Avoid confusion (use drug checking, label substances well). Always inform yourself about substance, dosage & side/interaction effects.

Use DMT only when you feel psychologically well. Test a small amount and wait at least 90 min. before re-dosing.

Consume only in safe places and with people you trust. Provide a sober companion who can provide assistance in an emergency. Exercise caution when moving and consuming food & beverages.

Vaping can be significantly less harmful than smoking. Only use vaporizers and base liquids from specialist retailers. Vaping requires significantly lower doses. Always use your own clean spraying equipment.

Every mixed consumption makes the trip more unpredictable. Take special care with substances that also affect the serotonin system (MDMA, speed, tramadol, SSRIs, etc.) - risk of serotonin syndrome. Avoid mixed consumption with MAO-inhibitors (check the package inserts of medications).

In case of oral consumption with MAO-inhibitors (Ayahuasca etc.) no consumption of tyramine-containing food, e.g. red wine & certain meat/cheese products, otherwise life-threatening high blood pressure is possible. Check the list online!

Take breaks - do not consume again until a long distance has elapsed.
