Liquid with a strong solvent smell
Poppers is the general term for inhalants from the group of alkyl nitrites. These include isopropyl nitrite, butyl nitrite, isobutyl nitrite, amyl nitrite, isoamyl nitrite, 2-methylbutyl nitrite and cyclohexyl nitrite. The liquids are colourless or yellowish, easily vapourisable and flammable. They are usually sold as small bottles in sex shops or on the internet with brand names like ‘Rush’, ‘Liquid Gold’ or ‘Jungle Juice’. From the brand name you can’t tell what the substance is – the labels are often wrong or incomplete. A lot of types of poppers have several alkyl nitrites as well as by-products (alcohols). Alkyl nitrites release nitric oxide (NO) in the body, which has a muscle relaxant, blood pressure lowering, pain killing and sexually stimulating effect. Be careful if using poppers: they cause serious damage if they come in contact with skin, mucous membrane or eye
Poppers is/are inhaled through the nose. Has a relaxing effect for a short time.
⫸ EFFECT
after ca. 15 seconds
⫸ LASTS
max. approx. 3 min;
Alkyl nitrites release nitric oxide (NO) in the body, which has a muscle relaxant, blood pressure lowering, pain killing and sexually stimulating effect. Be careful if using poppers: they cause serious damage if they come in contact with skin, mucous membrane or eyes!
⫸ Detectability
There is no general test to detect poppers. The by-products (alcohols) can be seen in blood for a few hours and in urine up to 12 hours.
⫸ CONTRAINDICATIONS
Those who have previous problems with the cardiovascular system, cardiac arrhythmia, weak heart muscle, heart valve defect, concussion or traumatic brain injury, artery dilation (aneurysms) or glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency should avoid poppers. People with anaemia, low blood pressure, epilepsy or glaucoma also have a higher risk for health complications.
⫸ SIDE EFFECTS
Blood pressure sinks due to the widening of blood vessels. Racing heart, visual disturbances, increased pressure in the eyes, headaches, feeling hot, dizziness, passing out, nausea, vomiting. Impairment of memory and motor functions. Problems with concentrating and ability to function well, also on the following day. Alkyl nitrites oxidise the iron in haemoglobin, the resulting methaemoglobin does not transport oxygen. This can lead to oxygen deficiency in the brain and other organs.
⫸ POSSIBLE LONG-TERM CONSEQUENCES
Getting used to sex with poppers, so that sex without no longer feels satisfying. Low immune system with frequent use. Frequent use is connected to retinal damage (maculopathy), which results in a permanent deterioration of vision. In test tube experiments alkyl nitrite was shown to damage and cause mutations in DNA. Doses of isobutyl nitrite in mice and rats showed higher incidences of adenomas and cancer (lung and thyroid). Studies on the carcinogenic effects of the other alkyl nitrites have not yet been made. The more frequently poppers are consumed over a lifetime, the higher the likelihood of developing cancer.
Don’t inhale straight from the bottle. Put a couple of drops on a cloth and carefully inhale, avoiding contact with skin. Make sure you get enough fresh air (oxygen).
Avoid all contact with skin, mucous membrane and eyes. If contact occurs, keep the area under cold running water for at least 20mins and call a doctor.
In case of swallowed unintentionally: drink water immediately and don’t try to throw up (danger of chemical burn to the oesophagus). Call an ambulance immediately!
For many users, poppers are sexually stimulating. The ability to self control may be impaired – so make sure to adhere to safer sex rules and boundaries. Have sex even without poppers - danger of addiction!
Poppers (liquid and vapour) are flammable. Be careful with lighters, cigarettes, candles etc.
Be especially careful when trying for the first time or trying a new type.
NEVER mix poppers with any PDE 5 inhibitors like Viagra (Sildenafil), Cialis (Tadalafil), Levitra (Vardenafil) or Spedra (Avanafil). This leads to a large drop in blood pressure or, in severe cases, a deadly failure of the cardiovascular system. If taking medications for high blood pressure, epilepsy, angina pectoris (incl. nitrates), cardiovascular or respiratory problems, the combination with poppers can lead to a sudden and deadly drop in blood pressure.
⫸ UPPER + POPPERS (e.g. speed, meth, cocaine)
big stress on the cardiovascular system.
⫸ ALCOHOL/ CANNABIS + POPPERS
Circulatory problems, feelings of dizziness, nausea possible.
⫸DOWNER (e.g. heroin, ketamine, laughing gas, benzos, GHB/GBL)
Due to the decrease in blood pressure and the restriction of oxygen supply, it can lead to an oxygen shortage, disorientation or loss of consciousness. Benzocain and sulfonamide also (like poppers) lead to the formation of methaemoglobin, which when combined can lead to a shortage of oxygen. This can show up as headaches, fatigue, disorientation, a greying or blue skin tone (cyanosis). absolutely call an emergency!
