Actually nitrous oxide [chem. N2O] or nitrogen oxides.
Causes changes in perception, numbs pain.
⫸ Usually the gas comes in a canister, and is then transferred into a different container (e.g. balloon).
⫸ Laughing gas is a colourless gas with a slightly sweet taste. It’s not explosive or flammable, but it is oxidising (speeds up the development of an existing fire). It’s approved as a food additive and is used for example in cans of whipped cream. In trade it comes in liquid form, which is then filled (through high pressure) into cartridges or canisters. Upon release it is gaseous. The required energy is extracted from the environment, which is thereby also cooled down. A typical capsule for whipped cream would have around 10ml compressed gas (7-9 bar) which would usually (at normal pressure of ca. 1 bar) expand out to around 4 liters.
LAUGHING GAS HAS QUICK ACTING ANTI DEPRESSIVE EFFECTS, REDUCES ANXIETY AND ALCOHOL AND OPIATE WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS. FOR GETTING HIGH, IT’S USUALLY FILLED INTO BALLOONS (WITHOUT OXYGEN) AND INHALED. THE INTOXICATING EFFECTS HIT IMMEDIATELY AFTER INHALATION AND LAST FOR A FEW SECONDS UP TO 2 MINUTES. IT CAN LEAD TO FEELINGS OF EUPHORIA, INCREASED EMPATHY, JOVIALITY AND SPONTANEOUS LAUGHING. YOU CAN FEEL DETACHED FROM TIME AND SPACE OR LOSE SENSE OF YOURSELF. SENSORY STIMULUS (ESPECIALLY MUSIC / SOUNDS) IS PERCEIVED AS INTENSIFIED OR DISTORTED. THE VOICE GETS DEEPER.
⫸ SIDE EFFECTS
Decrease in contractility of heart muscle, loss of laryngeal reflexes, impaired short-term memory, decreased alertness, circulatory problems, drowsiness, dizziness, fainting (rare), nausea/vomiting, increase in pressure, e.g., in middle ear.
⫸ POSSIBLE LONG-TERM EFFECTS
(Rare) physical dependence; inactivation of vitamin B12, inhibition of folic acid metabolism. Bone marrow and nerve damage if consumed in large amounts.
⫸ DETECTABILITY
Nitrous oxide is exhaled completely and unchanged through the lungs.
⫸ CONTRADICTIONS
Hypersensitivity, lung disease, impaired respiratory function, cardiovascular disease, head injury, increased intracranial pressure, middle ear problems, intestinal damage, diving accident, vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency, childbearing, pregnancy, lactation.
Ventilate rooms well.
Do not store nitrous oxide above 36°C, keep away from open fire and ignition sources, never mix with flammable gases.
