Actually nitrous oxide [chem. N2O] or nitrogen oxides.
⫸ Usually available in a cartridge (capsule) and consumed from a balloon.
Causes changes in perception, numbs pain.

⫸ Nitrous oxide is a colorless gas with a slightly sweet taste. It is approved as a food additive (E 942), belongs to the group of propellants and is used, for example, to foam whipped cream. It is filled into gas cylinders or cartridges under high pressure and immediately becomes gaseous when it escapes.
FOR INTOXICATION PURPOSES, LAUGHING GAS IS FILLED INTO BALLOONS AND INHALED. IT HAS ANTIDEPRESSANT EFFECTS, RELIEVES ANXIETY AND CAN LEAD TO EUPHORIA, IMPROVED EMPATHY AND CHEERFULNESS. SENSORY IMPRESSIONS ARE PERCEIVED IN A DISTORTED AND INTENSIFIED WAY. THE VOICE SOUNDS DEEPER.
⫸ SIDE EFFECTS
Decrease in contractility of heart muscle, loss of laryngeal reflexes, impaired short-term memory, decreased alertness, circulatory problems, drowsiness, dizziness, fainting (rare), nausea/vomiting, increase in pressure, e.g., in middle ear.
⫸ POSSIBLE LONG-TERM EFFECTS
(Rare) physical dependence; inactivation of vitamin B12, inhibition of folic acid metabolism. Bone marrow and nerve damage if consumed in large amounts.
⫸ DETECTABILITY
Nitrous oxide is exhaled completely and unchanged through the lungs.
⫸ CONTRADICTIONS
Hypersensitivity, lung disease, impaired respiratory function, cardiovascular disease, head injury, increased intracranial pressure, middle ear problems, intestinal damage, diving accident, vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency, childbearing, pregnancy, lactation.
Â
Ventilate rooms well.
Do not store nitrous oxide above 36°C, keep away from open fire and ignition sources, never mix with flammable gases.
