Alcohol use is widespread and culturally integrated in many countries. Apart from humans, many other mammals also use alcohol (in the form of fermented fruits) to intoxicate themselves.Alcohol is poison for cells and nerves. Experts estimate that it is the drug that causes the highest amount of social damage. In Germany, beer, wine and sparkling wine are available to young people from the age of 16 and over, and liquor and spirits from 18 years and over.
ONSET OF EFFECT depends on the individual, the drink, the amount of alcohol and how much the person has eaten. The maximum level of blood alcohol concentration is reached after around 45-60mins.
DURATION OF EFFECT/TRACEABILITY depends on the amount drank. Rule of thumb: 0.1 per mille is broken down every hour.
Relaxes, reduces anxiety, boosts mood, lowers inhibitions, numbing. Available as beer, wine/sparkling wine, liquor and spirits.
PARTICULARLY RISKY FOR those with mental health problems, liver, kidney or stomach problems, diabetes or cardiovascular problems. Due to the negative impact on the development of the brain, young people shouldn’t drink alcohol, or if so then only a very small amount.
After effects Hangover: Feeling weak, irritable, headaches, nausea.
Long term use can result in damage to the liver, stomach, heart, and pancreas. Increased risk of cancer, weakened immune system, possible decrease in mental abilities, sleep problems, irritability, impotence/ infertility. Risk of mental and physical dependence with withdrawal symptoms such as shaking, sweating, malaise, restlessness, anxiety etc. Alcohol withdrawal without medical supervision can be deadly.
GUIDANCE ON LOW-RISK CONSUMPTION
The maximum limit is one standard drink (e.g. small beer, 0.3 l) for women or two for men per day. Don’t drink daily. Alcohol decreases inhibitions and can leave you in a vulnerable state. Plan beforehand what, how much, with whom, and in which situation you want to drink.
Only drink when you want to, don’t be persuaded – it’s your decision! Eat enough before you drink to protect your stomach lining. The alcohol effect kicks in fully after one hour – don’t drink too much too soon. Mixing different types of alcohol can increase discomfort.
Alcohol dehydrates the body (which increases the danger of passing out and gives you the headache after). Rule of thumb: for every alcoholic drink, drink one alcohol free drink – preferably water (without gas).
